Diet and nutrition

After lap band surgery, diet and nutrients plays an important part in achieving the goal of weight loss. To get better result you have to follow post-operative diets. Diet harts are designed in such a way that it will not give any stretch to lap band and you will not feel any problem including any nutrients deficiency. There is time procedure to take food.

From right after the surgery to at least 1 or 2 weeks you have to be on liquid because band will not allow any food. Food may stretch band. After 2 weeks you can take pureed food for 3 to 4 weeks. After 5 weeks, it allow to have soft food and then after solid food in small amount which will not create any problem in your stomach. It means post-operative diet is for at least 6 weeks but after that also you have to change your life style. You have to cut yourself from calorie food and other type of food which is responsible for morbid obesity.

Always try to take nutrient food. Meet to your nutritionist to make a diet chart of nutrients food. Your stomach can hold small amount of food at a time so eat less. Here is a list of procedure to take diet.

During 1-2 weeks

In this phase patient are only directed to be on liquid. It's become very important for you to keep yourself hydrated with lots of water. Liquid pass through the upper stomach pouch quickly and you feel not full. But never try to drink lots of water at a time or in hurry. You can take other liquid during this phase like soup with no vegetables or meat, skim milk and fruit juice.

During 3-4 weeks

In this phase you may start with some soft food but you still are on liquid more. When you transect yourself from liquid to food then you have to be conscious about choosing the food. You can eat pureed food which having slightly texture foods. Eat protein enriched food. You can take pureed skinless fish or chicken, peas, mashed potatoes, low-fat yogurt etc.

During or after 5 weeks-

Now you can include tender cooked foods like fish and ground turkey in your meal. Chew your food well.

When you are totally transacted to food then you have to be more conscious. There are some foods which you have to avoid and there are some foods which you have to take. Consult to your doctor for that. You have to take more precaution in that. This means like don't drink water just after the meal or in large quantity it cause vomiting, nausea or swelling also there may be chances of slippage of band. Never eat big or larger chunky food.



Food to take


After lap band surgery your full diet is concentrated with liquid. Purely you have to be on liquid. After 3 or 4 weeks when you progressed through the diet of liquids and pureed foods, you will once again be able to eat normal food. But right after lap band surgery you can take a sip of water or suck on an ice cube. The day after surgery you can take little more liquid but only a small at a time. Don’t drink too much it may cause vomiting and nausea. You prefer liquid because it passes through the upper stomach pouch quickly and you feel not full.

After 4 weeks of surgery, you can start up with soft food. You should avoid large or chunky food. You can include tender cooked foods like ground turkey and fish in your meal. After some time you can go for solid food but if solid food cause nausea or vomiting then go back to liquid again then slowly come to soft food and then add solid food in your diet. Totally you have to change you life style. You should make a healthy food choice.

Before your meal, first drink three or four glasses of water. Try to eat less because your stomach pouch can hold only small amount of food at a time. Chew your food well. Don’t eat when you are not hungry. In this stage you have to take nutrients enriched foods to avoid the deficiency. Lap band patients have high probability of having protein deficiency. They should take 50 to 60 gm of protein every day. Protein deficiency causes fatigue, hair loss, muscle weakness, depression, anemia, edema, low blood pressure, delay in wound healing and sometimes death too.

Eat orange or grapes after removing the skin. You should select low-fat protein like fish, meat, skinless poultry, eggs etc. You can eat meat, but when you are going to eat meat Just remove all visible fat from the meat. Remove the skin from poultry. You should prepare the meat in such ways that require very little fat. Microwaving, Grilling, steaming or boiling all is good ways to do this. Drink plenty of water.

You can choose food from following:

Fruits and vegetables, Breads and cereals, Dairy products like yogurt and milk in which calories is in liquid form, calcium food, take a maximum of 2 cups of skimmed milk, try to take low-fat yogurt and 1 oz. of cheese a day, low-fat salad dressings and mayonnaise in moderation, Drink liquids which is calorie-free per day and drink would be black tea or black coffee with low-calorie sweetener, non-carbonated beverages with few or no calories.

Food to avoid

After lap band surgery there is a post-operative diet plans which you have to follow seriously if you want a better result then. Your surgeon will tell you everything about what to eat or what not. Diet is very important in this surgery. Diet plan is divided in to phase. You have to follow that post-operative diet plan. This means what to eat at what phase. Just eat the food which is low in calories and high in nutritional value. Lap band is to restrict the intake of food so never eat more. This may cause discomfort and problem in outlet of band. To achieve the goal of weight loss you have to follow the diet and nutrition guidelines recommended by your doctor.

There are some foods which you have to avoid-

There are some food which you have to avoid such as--- Dried fruits, asparagus, Pineapple ,Rhubarb ,Corn (especially popcorn), Grapes, Nuts and seeds (walnuts, whole peanuts, almonds), ice-cream, milkshakes, pasta, rice, doughy breads, Carbonated beverages, cream soups, cream sauces, High calorie foods/drinks, sugary foods, alcohol, chocolate, chips, pies, pastries, ice-cream, other fruit juices, cakes, cookies, whole milk, bacon, sausage, syrups, honey, jelly, jam, , candy, fried foods, , soda, beer, orange juice, apple juice, Fibrous foods etc.

You should avoid carbonated beverages and this includes beer or champagne. High calorie and high fat food is avoided. Starchy and white flour food is also avoided. There is some problematic food which cause problem to lap band when you try to eat like fibrous foods such as asparagus, celery, corn, dried fruit, oranges, pineapples, sweet potatoes. These foods can get stuck in the stoma which is a stomach opening created with LAP-BAND. Some other foods are nuts, popcorn, skins and seeds of fruits and vegetables, and tough meats such as steak, pork chops, and hamburger.

Alcohol is strictly prohibited because it is high in calories. It break downs calories and it has no nutritional value. You shouldn’t drink within an hour of eating if you try to drink on an empty stomach then your tolerance will be low. You should eat three meals a day and never eat snack between the meals.
