Question: lap band Achalasia ?
Does the lapband have anything to do with Achalasia? If so, what suggestion do you have for treatment? I do not want to give up the lapband!
Thanking you in advance for your help.

Answer 1 Alchalsia is an esophagus disorder wherein the proper relaxation of lower oesophagus sphincter doesn’t take place while swallowing. The patients who have gone through Lap Band surgery with normal band position and abdomen width can have complications of Alchalsia , but the complication is found only in the patients with preexisting lack of the lower esophageal sphincter(LES) resulting pitiable compliance with dietetic directions and inadequate weight loss record .
It is mandatory for oesophagas to push food via pouch and opening in lower abdomen. Hence the band should not be too tight as it results in oesophagus dilation. For three months band should be completely deflated and proper check up of oesophagus should be done with a barium meal in order to see whether it has returned to its normal condition or not.
In order to reduce the percentage occurrence of such complication the proper check up of the oesophagus must be done using manometer before operation.
However if a person suffer from this long term postoperative problems he needs to have re-operation that completely treats the complication well. Thus you need not give up your LAP BAND as it is not going to harm you at all unless you follow the diet directions well and attend your physician regularly.
